Overview
Most babies with Erb's palsy recover fully within the first months of life. Some need therapy or surgery to improve arm function.
Signs
- Weakness or lack of movement in one arm
- The arm held at the side with the elbow straight and wrist bent
- Reduced grip on the affected side
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by stretching of the brachial plexus nerves during a difficult delivery. Risk factors include a large baby, a long labour and shoulder difficulty during birth.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on examination. Nerve tests and imaging may be used if recovery is slow.
Treatment
Physiotherapy with gentle exercises helps most babies. Surgery to repair nerves or move tendons may be advised if recovery is incomplete by a few months of age.
When to see a doctor
See a specialist early if a newborn does not move one arm normally.
