Causes and risk factors
Causes include heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, alcohol, some medicines, low testosterone, nerve damage, stress and anxiety.
Diagnosis
A doctor takes a history, examines you and checks blood sugar, cholesterol and hormone levels.
Treatment
Treatment includes lifestyle changes, managing underlying conditions, medicines such as PDE5 inhibitors, counselling and other options such as injections or devices.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if erection problems last or cause distress. It can be a useful warning sign to check your heart and blood vessels.
