Overview

Eye allergies are common and often occur with hay fever. They are not contagious and can be controlled with treatment.

Symptoms

  • Itchy, red eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Burning or a gritty feeling
  • Sneezing and a runny nose

Causes and risk factors

Common triggers include pollen, dust mites, pet dander and mould. A personal or family history of allergies increases the risk.

Diagnosis

A doctor diagnoses it from symptoms and an eye examination. Allergy tests may help identify triggers.

Treatment

Treatment includes avoiding triggers, cool compresses, artificial tears and anti-allergy eye drops or tablets.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if symptoms are severe, do not improve with treatment or come with eye pain or reduced vision. KIH can guide you to an eye specialist.
