Overview

A facelift can improve sagging skin, deep folds and jowls in the lower face and neck. It does not stop ageing, but results can last many years. It is often combined with eyelid or neck procedures.

Who it may help

  • People with sagging skin in the cheeks, jawline or neck
  • People with deep folds between the nose and mouth
  • Healthy non-smokers with realistic expectations

What to expect

The surgery is usually done under general anaesthesia or sedation. Cuts are made in the hairline and around the ears, the deeper tissues are tightened and excess skin is removed.

Recovery and risks

Bruising and swelling usually settle over two to three weeks. Possible risks include bleeding, infection, nerve injury, scarring, hair loss near the cuts and asymmetry. Smoking increases the risk of poor healing.

When to see a doctor

Book a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your goals. After surgery, seek care quickly for increasing swelling on one side, severe pain, fever or wound discharge.
