Overview
Everyone feels tired sometimes, but fatigue or sleepiness that lasts for weeks and affects daily life can be a sign of a medical, sleep or mental health problem.
Symptoms
- Lack of energy that does not improve with rest
- Falling asleep during the day, at work or while driving
- Poor concentration and memory
- Low mood or irritability
Causes and risk factors
Common causes include poor or short sleep, obstructive sleep apnoea, anaemia, an underactive thyroid, diabetes, depression, anxiety, infections, medicines and narcolepsy.
Diagnosis
A doctor asks about sleep, mood and lifestyle and may order blood tests. A sleep study may be needed if a sleep disorder is suspected.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause and may include better sleep habits, treating anaemia or thyroid problems, managing stress and mood, and treatment for sleep apnoea.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if tiredness lasts more than a few weeks, comes with weight loss or other symptoms, or you fall asleep while driving.
