Overview
Sexual problems are common in women and can have physical, hormonal, emotional and relationship causes. Treatment works best when these are addressed together.
Symptoms
- Little or no physical response to sexual stimulation
- Vaginal dryness during sex
- Reduced pleasure or sensation
- Distress or relationship strain because of these changes
Causes and risk factors
Causes include menopause and low hormone levels, diabetes, some medicines such as antidepressants, depression, anxiety, stress, past trauma and relationship problems.
Diagnosis
A doctor takes a careful history, reviews medicines and may do an examination and hormone tests.
Treatment
Treatment may include treating underlying conditions, adjusting medicines, lubricants or vaginal oestrogen, counselling and sex therapy.
