Overview
Fibromyalgia does not damage the joints or muscles, but the pain is real. It is thought to involve increased sensitivity to pain in the nervous system. Symptoms can be managed with a combination of approaches.
Symptoms
- Widespread pain and stiffness
- Extreme tiredness
- Poor-quality sleep
- Problems with memory and concentration
- Headaches, irritable bowel and low mood
Causes and risk factors
The cause is not fully understood. It is more common in women and may follow physical or emotional stress, infection or injury.
Diagnosis
There is no specific test. Diagnosis is based on symptoms, examination and blood tests to rule out other conditions.
Treatment
Treatment includes regular graded exercise, sleep improvement, psychological therapies, education and certain medicines for pain and sleep.

See a doctor if you have widespread pain and tiredness lasting more than a few months.
