Overview
Most people recover from flu within a week or two. It can be serious for older people, young children, pregnant women and people with long-term conditions.
Symptoms
- Sudden fever and chills
- Body aches and headache
- Tiredness and weakness
- Dry cough and sore throat
- Runny or blocked nose
Causes and risk factors
Flu is caused by influenza viruses and spreads through coughs, sneezes and touching contaminated surfaces.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms. A swab test can confirm it.
Treatment
Rest, fluids and fever relief help most people. Antiviral medicines may be given to people at high risk. The yearly flu vaccine is the best protection.
When to see a doctor
Seek care if you are in a high-risk group or symptoms last more than a week. Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion or symptoms that improve and then get worse.
