Overview

Fungal nail infections more often affect the toenails. They are not usually serious but can take a long time to treat.

Symptoms

  • Thickened nails
  • White, yellow or brown discolouration
  • Brittle or crumbly nails
  • Nails lifting from the nail bed
  • Discomfort when walking

Causes and risk factors

Risk factors include older age, damp and sweaty feet, athlete's foot, diabetes, poor circulation, walking barefoot in public areas and nail injuries.

Diagnosis

A doctor examines the nail and may send clippings for testing.

Treatment

Treatment includes antifungal nail paints for mild infections and antifungal tablets for more severe ones. Treatment may take months. Keeping feet dry helps prevent it.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if a nail infection is painful or spreading, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation.
