Overview
Gastroenteritis is very common and usually gets better within a few days. The main risk is dehydration, especially in babies, young children and older adults.
Symptoms
- Diarrhoea and vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea
- Fever and aches
- Signs of dehydration such as thirst and passing little urine
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites spread through contaminated food or water and close contact.
Diagnosis
Most cases are diagnosed from symptoms. Stool tests are done for severe, bloody or long-lasting illness.
Treatment
Treatment is drinking plenty of fluids, oral rehydration solution and rest. Children should also receive zinc. Antibiotics are only needed for some infections.
When to see a doctor
Seek care for signs of dehydration, blood in the stool, vomiting that does not stop, high fever or symptoms lasting more than a few days. Seek urgent care for a drowsy child.
