Overview
Generalised anxiety disorder is long-term but very treatable. It can affect sleep, work and relationships if not managed.
Symptoms
- Constant worry that is hard to control
- Restlessness or feeling on edge
- Tiredness and difficulty concentrating
- Irritability
- Muscle tension
- Difficulty sleeping
- Palpitations, sweating or dizziness
Causes and risk factors
Causes include genetics, stressful life events, long-term health problems, alcohol or drug use and other mental health conditions.
Diagnosis
A doctor or psychiatrist diagnoses it through a conversation about symptoms. Tests may rule out physical causes.
Treatment
Treatment includes talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, medicines such as SSRIs, relaxation techniques, exercise and reducing caffeine and alcohol.
