Overview
Glaucoma is a leading cause of permanent blindness. The most common type develops slowly without symptoms, so regular eye checks are important. Treatment can prevent further vision loss.
Symptoms
- Often no symptoms early on
- Gradual loss of side vision
- In acute glaucoma: sudden eye pain, red eye, blurred vision, haloes around lights, headache and vomiting
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include age over 40, family history, high eye pressure, short or long sight, diabetes and long-term steroid use.
Diagnosis
An eye specialist measures eye pressure, examines the optic nerve and tests the visual field.
Treatment
Treatment includes eye drops to lower pressure, laser treatment and surgery. Treatment is usually lifelong.
When to see a doctor
Have regular eye checks after 40, or earlier with a family history. Seek emergency care for a painful red eye with blurred vision. KIH can guide you to an eye specialist.
