Overview

Gingivitis is the early, reversible stage. If untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which can cause teeth to loosen and fall out.

Symptoms

  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Gums pulling away from the teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Pain when chewing

Causes and risk factors

It is caused by plaque build-up. Risk factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, hormonal changes in pregnancy and some medicines.

Diagnosis

A dentist examines the gums, measures gum pockets and may take X-rays.

Treatment

Treatment includes professional cleaning, scaling and root planing, good brushing and flossing, and, for advanced disease, gum surgery.

When to see a doctor

See a dentist if your gums bleed, are swollen or your teeth feel loose. Regular dental check-ups help prevent gum disease.
