Overview
Gynaecomastia is common in newborns, teenagers and older men and often goes away on its own. It can sometimes be caused by hormone imbalance or medicines.
Symptoms
- Swelling of breast tissue on one or both sides
- Breast tenderness
- A rubbery lump behind the nipple
Causes and risk factors
Causes include normal hormone changes in puberty, obesity, some medicines, anabolic steroids, liver or kidney disease, an overactive thyroid and low testosterone.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the breasts and may order hormone tests and an ultrasound or mammogram.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. It often settles without treatment. Medicines or surgery to remove breast tissue may be considered for persistent cases.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a breast lump, especially if it is hard, on one side only, or comes with nipple discharge.
