Overview
A heart attack is usually caused by a blood clot in a narrowed coronary artery. Fast treatment to restore blood flow saves heart muscle and lives. Every minute counts.
Symptoms
- Chest pain, pressure or tightness that may spread to the arm, jaw, neck or back
- Shortness of breath
- Sweating
- Nausea or vomiting
- Feeling light-headed or anxious
- Women, older people and people with diabetes may have milder or unusual symptoms
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, inactivity, stress, family history and older age.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses an ECG, blood tests for heart damage (troponin) and coronary angiography.
Treatment
Treatment includes urgent angioplasty and stenting or clot-busting medicines, followed by long-term medicines, cardiac rehabilitation and lifestyle changes. Some people need bypass surgery.
When to see a doctor
