Overview
Small hiatal hernias are common and often cause no symptoms. Larger ones can cause acid reflux and other problems.
Symptoms
- Heartburn and acid reflux
- Bringing food or acid back up
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chest pain or a feeling of fullness after eating
- Shortness of breath with large hernias
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include older age, obesity, pregnancy, constant coughing and straining.
Diagnosis
It is often found on an endoscopy, barium swallow or CT scan.
Treatment
Treatment includes weight loss, smaller meals, avoiding lying down after eating and acid-reducing medicines. Surgery may be needed for large hernias or symptoms that do not improve.
