High blood pressure often causes no symptoms, which is why it is called a silent condition. Over time, it damages blood vessels and organs. Regular checks and treatment greatly reduce the risk of complications.

Diagnosis
Blood pressure is measured with a cuff on several occasions. Home or 24-hour monitoring may be used. Blood tests, urine tests and an ECG check for effects on the body.
Treatment
Lifestyle changes include eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight and not smoking. Many people also need medicines, which should be taken regularly even when you feel well.
When to see a doctor
Have your blood pressure checked regularly, especially if you are over 40 or have risk factors. Seek emergency care for a severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness, confusion or weakness.
