Overview

HIV has no cure, but modern treatment controls the virus. People on effective treatment can live long, healthy lives and do not pass HIV to sexual partners when the virus is undetectable.

Symptoms

  • A flu-like illness a few weeks after infection
  • Often no symptoms for years
  • Later: weight loss, fever, night sweats and frequent infections
  • AIDS-related infections and cancers in advanced disease

Causes and risk factors

HIV spreads through unprotected sex, sharing needles, unsafe blood transfusions or injections, and from mother to baby during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding.

Diagnosis

Blood tests detect HIV. Early testing allows early treatment.

Treatment

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is taken daily for life. Regular monitoring checks the immune system and viral load. Prevention includes condoms, safe injections and medicines to prevent infection.

When to see a doctor

Get tested if you think you may have been exposed. Seek care within 72 hours of a possible exposure, as preventive medicine may help.
