- A change in pitch
- Throat discomfort
Causes and risk factors
Causes include laryngitis, voice overuse, acid reflux, vocal cord nodules or polyps, smoking, thyroid problems, nerve damage and throat cancer.
Diagnosis
An ENT specialist examines the voice box with a small camera (laryngoscopy).
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause and may include voice rest, fluids, treating reflux, voice therapy, stopping smoking or surgery for growths.
