Overview
Hyperaldosteronism is an important and often missed cause of high blood pressure. It can be treated, and in some cases cured.
Symptoms
- High blood pressure that is hard to control
- Muscle weakness or cramps
- Tiredness
- Increased thirst and passing urine often
- Often no specific symptoms
Causes and risk factors
It is usually caused by a benign tumour in one adrenal gland or overactivity of both adrenal glands.
Diagnosis
Blood tests measure aldosterone, renin and potassium. CT scans and adrenal vein sampling can show which gland is affected.
Treatment
Treatment may include surgery to remove an affected adrenal gland or medicines that block aldosterone, such as spironolactone.
When to see a doctor
Ask your doctor about testing if you have high blood pressure at a young age, blood pressure that needs several medicines or low potassium.
