Overview
Extra teeth most often appear behind the upper front teeth. They can affect the position of other teeth and may need removal.
Signs
- An extra tooth visible in the mouth
- Crowding or misalignment of teeth
- Permanent teeth not coming through
- Gaps between teeth
Causes and risk factors
The cause is not fully understood. It is more common in some genetic conditions, such as cleft lip and palate and cleidocranial dysplasia.
Diagnosis
A dentist diagnoses it with an examination and dental X-rays.
Treatment
Treatment may include removing the extra teeth and orthodontic treatment to straighten the remaining teeth.
When to see a doctor
See a dentist if your child's teeth are crowded or permanent teeth are not coming through as expected.
