Overview
Hypergonadism can cause early puberty in children and hormonal changes in adults. Treatment depends on the cause.
Symptoms
- Early puberty in children
- Acne and oily skin
- Excess facial or body hair in women
- Irregular periods
- Mood changes
Causes and risk factors
Causes include tumours of the ovaries, testes or adrenal glands, some genetic conditions, problems with the pituitary gland, and the use of anabolic steroids or hormones.
Diagnosis
Blood tests measure hormone levels. Ultrasound or other scans look for tumours.
Treatment
Treatment may include medicines to block hormones, stopping the use of external hormones, or surgery to remove a tumour.
When to see a doctor
