Overview
The pituitary gland controls many other hormone glands. Overproduction can lead to conditions such as acromegaly, Cushing's disease or high prolactin.
Symptoms
- Enlarged hands, feet and facial features (excess growth hormone)
- Weight gain, round face and high blood pressure (excess cortisol)
- Irregular periods, breast milk discharge or low sex drive (excess prolactin)
- Headaches and vision problems from a large tumour
Causes and risk factors
Most cases are caused by a non-cancerous pituitary tumour (adenoma). Some inherited conditions increase the risk.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses hormone blood tests, MRI of the pituitary and eye field tests.
Treatment
Treatment may include medicines, surgery to remove the tumour (often through the nose) and radiotherapy.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you notice changes in your face, hands or feet, unusual weight gain, irregular periods or persistent headaches with vision changes.
