Overview
Children's blood pressure is compared with that of other children of the same age, sex and height. Treating high blood pressure early protects the heart, kidneys and blood vessels.
Symptoms
- Usually no symptoms
- Headaches
- Nosebleeds
- Vision problems or fits in severe cases
Causes and risk factors
In younger children it is often caused by kidney, heart or hormone problems. In older children and teenagers it is often linked to obesity, inactivity, a salty diet and family history.
Diagnosis
Blood pressure is checked several times using the right cuff size. Blood, urine and imaging tests look for a cause.
Treatment
Treatment includes healthy eating, less salt, regular activity and weight management. Medicines are used when needed, and any underlying cause is treated.
When to see a doctor
Children should have their blood pressure checked during routine visits from age 3. Seek urgent care for a child with very high blood pressure and headache, vomiting or vision changes.
