Overview
Hyperthyroidism is common, especially in women. It can be treated effectively with medicines, radioactive iodine or surgery.
Symptoms
- Weight loss despite a good appetite
- Fast or irregular heartbeat
- Nervousness, anxiety and irritability
- Tremor of the hands
- Sweating and heat intolerance
- Diarrhoea
- Bulging eyes in Graves' disease
Causes and risk factors
The most common cause is Graves' disease. Others include thyroid nodules and inflammation of the thyroid.
Diagnosis
Blood tests measure thyroid hormones and TSH. Antibody tests, thyroid scans or ultrasound help find the cause.
Treatment
Treatment includes anti-thyroid medicines, beta-blockers for symptoms, radioactive iodine or surgery.

See a doctor for unexplained weight loss, palpitations, tremor or anxiety. Seek urgent care for very fast heartbeat, fever and confusion.
