Overview
Sex drive naturally varies between people and over time. When low desire is persistent and causes distress, it can be assessed and treated.
Symptoms
- Little or no interest in sex
- Few or no sexual thoughts
- Distress or relationship difficulties because of low desire
Causes and risk factors
Causes include relationship problems, stress, depression, anxiety, tiredness, hormonal changes such as menopause or low testosterone, chronic illness and some medicines.
Diagnosis
A doctor takes a history, reviews medicines and may check hormone levels.
Treatment
Treatment may include counselling or sex therapy, treating depression or other conditions, changing medicines and hormone treatment in selected cases.
