Overview
Hypospadias is one of the most common birth differences in boys. It can be corrected with surgery, usually in the first year or two of life.
Signs
- The urine opening on the underside of the penis
- A downward curve of the penis
- A hooded appearance due to incomplete foreskin
- An abnormal urine stream
Causes and risk factors
The cause is often unknown. Family history and hormone factors during pregnancy may play a role.
Diagnosis
It is diagnosed at the newborn examination.
Treatment
Surgery moves the opening to the tip and straightens the penis. Babies with hypospadias should not be circumcised before seeing a specialist, as the foreskin may be needed for repair.
When to see a doctor
See a paediatric urologist or surgeon if your baby has hypospadias, ideally before any circumcision.
