Overview
Children with idiopathic short stature are healthy and have normal hormone levels but are much shorter than other children of the same age and sex.
Signs
- Height well below that of other children of the same age
- Normal growth rate in many cases
- Normal body proportions
- No other symptoms of illness
Causes and risk factors
By definition, no specific cause is found. Family height patterns and genetics play a role.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made after measuring growth over time and doing tests to rule out other causes, such as hormone, genetic, bone or chronic conditions. A bone age X-ray is usually done.
Treatment
Many children need only monitoring and reassurance. Growth hormone treatment may be considered in selected children after specialist assessment.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if your child is much shorter than other children or seems to be growing slowly.
