Overview
Wisdom teeth are the most commonly impacted teeth, but upper canines can also be affected. Impacted teeth may cause no problems or lead to pain, infection or damage to nearby teeth.
Symptoms
- Pain or swelling in the gum
- Red, tender gums
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- Often no symptoms
Causes and risk factors
Teeth can become impacted when there is not enough room in the jaw or when a tooth grows at an angle.
Diagnosis
A dentist examines the mouth and takes X-rays.
Treatment
Teeth without symptoms may be monitored. Treatment may include removing the tooth or, for canines, orthodontic treatment to guide the tooth into place.
When to see a doctor
See a dentist for pain or swelling at the back of the mouth. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing.
