Overview
Ingrown toenails are common and can become painful and infected. Most improve with simple care, but some need a minor procedure.
Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness along the side of the nail
- Redness and swelling
- Pus or bleeding if infected
- Overgrowth of skin around the nail
Causes and risk factors
Causes include cutting nails too short or curved, tight shoes, injury and naturally curved nails. People with diabetes are at greater risk of complications.
Diagnosis
A doctor diagnoses it by examining the toe.
Treatment
Treatment includes warm soaks, proper nail cutting, comfortable shoes and antibiotics if infected. A minor procedure can remove part of the nail and stop it growing back.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if the toe is very painful, infected or keeps coming back, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation.
