Overview
Insomnia is very common. Short-term insomnia often follows stress, while long-term insomnia can last for months. Most people improve with changes to sleep habits and therapy.
Symptoms
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Waking during the night
- Waking too early
- Feeling unrefreshed
- Tiredness, irritability and poor concentration during the day
Causes and risk factors
Causes include stress, anxiety, depression, pain, caffeine, alcohol, screen use, shift work, some medicines and sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea.
Diagnosis
A doctor asks about sleep habits and may suggest a sleep diary. A sleep study may be needed if another sleep disorder is suspected.
Treatment
Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is the most effective treatment. Good sleep habits help. Sleeping tablets may be used for short periods.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if poor sleep lasts more than a few weeks or affects your daily life.
