Overview
Interstitial cystitis is more common in women. There is no infection, but symptoms can be similar to a urinary tract infection. Treatment can help control symptoms.
Symptoms
- Pain or pressure in the bladder or pelvis
- Needing to pass urine often, day and night
- A sudden urge to pass urine
- Pain that improves after passing urine
- Pain during sex
Causes and risk factors
The cause is not fully understood. It may involve damage to the bladder lining, inflammation and nerve sensitivity.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made after ruling out infection and other causes, using urine tests, a bladder diary and sometimes cystoscopy.
Treatment
Treatment includes avoiding trigger foods and drinks, bladder training, pelvic floor physiotherapy, medicines and bladder instillations.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have bladder pain or frequent urination that does not go away.
