Overview
Kallmann syndrome affects the brain's production of the hormone that starts puberty. Hormone treatment can bring on puberty and help with fertility.
Symptoms
- Puberty that does not start or is incomplete
- Reduced or absent sense of smell
- Small testes in boys
- Absent periods in girls
- Infertility
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by gene changes that affect the development of certain brain cells before birth. It can run in families.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses hormone blood tests, a smell test, MRI of the brain and genetic testing.
Treatment
Treatment includes sex hormone replacement to bring on puberty and keep bones healthy, and hormone treatment to help fertility.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if puberty has not started by age 13 in girls or 14 in boys, especially if there is a poor sense of smell.
