Overview
Keloids are not harmful but can be itchy, painful or a cosmetic concern. They can come back after treatment.
Symptoms
- A firm, raised, shiny scar
- Scar that keeps growing over months
- Itching or tenderness
- Pink, red or darker colour
Causes and risk factors
Keloids can form after cuts, burns, piercings, acne, surgery or vaccination. They are more common in people with darker skin and run in families.
Diagnosis
A doctor diagnoses a keloid by examining the scar.
Treatment
Treatment includes steroid injections, silicone gels or sheets, pressure dressings, freezing, laser and surgery, often combined to reduce recurrence.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if a scar is growing, painful or itchy, or if you are prone to keloids and planning surgery or a piercing.
