Overview
Kidney cancer is often found by chance on a scan done for another reason. When found early, it can often be cured with surgery.
Symptoms
- Blood in the urine
- Pain in the side or back that does not go away
- A lump in the side
- Tiredness, weight loss and fever
- Often no symptoms early on
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, long-term dialysis and some inherited conditions.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses ultrasound, CT or MRI scans and sometimes a biopsy.
Treatment
Treatment includes surgery to remove part or all of the kidney, ablation for small tumours, targeted therapy and immunotherapy for advanced cancer.
