Overview
Some curve in the upper back is normal. Kyphosis is when the curve is greater than usual. It can be caused by posture, abnormal bone development or bone weakness.
Symptoms
- A rounded or hunched upper back
- Back pain and stiffness
- Tiredness in the back muscles
- Breathing difficulty in severe cases
Causes and risk factors
Causes include poor posture, Scheuermann's disease in teenagers, osteoporosis with spinal fractures, birth defects of the spine and injury.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the spine. X-rays measure the curve. MRI or bone density scans may be done.
Treatment
Treatment includes posture correction, exercises, physiotherapy, bracing in growing children and treatment for osteoporosis. Severe cases may need surgery.
When to see a doctor
