Overview
Most small cuts heal well with simple first aid. Deeper or larger cuts may need stitches, glue or strips to heal properly and reduce scarring.
Symptoms
- A break in the skin
- Bleeding
- Pain and swelling
- Numbness or difficulty moving a part if nerves or tendons are injured
Causes and risk factors
Common causes are falls, sharp objects, glass, machinery, road accidents and animal bites.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the wound and checks for damage to nerves, tendons and blood vessels. An X-ray may be done to look for foreign objects.
Treatment
Treatment includes cleaning the wound, closing it with stitches, glue or strips, and a tetanus vaccine if needed. Antibiotics may be given for bites or dirty wounds.
When to see a doctor
Seek care for deep or gaping cuts, bleeding that does not stop with pressure, cuts on the face or hands, animal bites, dirty wounds or signs of infection.
