Overview
Lactose intolerance is common, especially in adults. It is not an allergy and is not dangerous. Most people can manage symptoms by adjusting their diet.
Symptoms
- Bloating and wind
- Stomach cramps
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Symptoms 30 minutes to a few hours after dairy
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by low levels of lactase, the enzyme that digests lactose. It can be inherited or follow a bowel infection or conditions such as coeliac disease.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms improving when dairy is removed. A hydrogen breath test can confirm it.
Treatment
Treatment includes limiting lactose, choosing lactose-free products, yoghurt and hard cheeses, and lactase supplements. A dietitian can help maintain calcium intake.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have ongoing digestive symptoms, weight loss or blood in the stool.
