Overview
Lip cancer is a type of oral cancer. It is often found early because it is easy to see, and early treatment has good results.
Symptoms
- A sore or ulcer on the lip that does not heal
- A lump or thickening on the lip
- A white or red patch
- Bleeding, pain or numbness of the lip
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include sun exposure, smoking, chewing tobacco, betel nut, paan and gutka, alcohol, fair skin and a weak immune system.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the lip and takes a biopsy. Scans check whether it has spread.
Treatment
Treatment is usually surgery, sometimes followed by reconstruction and radiotherapy.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a lip sore or lump that does not heal within three weeks. Using sun protection and avoiding tobacco reduce the risk.
