Overview
Liposuction is used to contour areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms and chin. It is not a weight-loss treatment and works best for people close to a healthy weight.
Who it may help
- People with fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise
- People with good skin elasticity
- Healthy adults with realistic expectations
What to expect
The surgeon makes small cuts and uses a thin tube to suction out fat. It may be done under general or local anaesthesia.
Recovery and risks
Compression garments are worn for several weeks. Bruising and swelling settle gradually. Possible risks include bleeding, infection, uneven contours, numbness, fluid collection and, rarely, blood clots.
When to see a doctor
Book a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss whether liposuction is right for you. After surgery, seek urgent care for chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling or fever.
