Overview
Liver cancer often develops in people with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B or C. Regular screening of people at risk helps find it early, when treatment is more effective.
Symptoms
- Pain in the upper right abdomen
- Weight loss and loss of appetite
- Swelling of the abdomen
- Jaundice
- Tiredness
- Often no symptoms early on
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include chronic hepatitis B or C, cirrhosis, heavy alcohol use, fatty liver disease, diabetes and obesity.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses ultrasound, CT or MRI scans, an AFP blood test and sometimes a biopsy.
Treatment
Treatment may include surgery, liver transplant, ablation, chemoembolisation, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.
When to see a doctor
People with hepatitis B, C or cirrhosis should have regular liver screening. See a doctor for abdominal pain, swelling, jaundice or weight loss.
