Lung cancer is divided into non-small cell and small cell types. Most cases are linked to smoking. Finding it early increases the chance of successful treatment.

- Coughing up blood
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Weight loss and tiredness
- Repeated chest infections
Causes and risk factors
Smoking is the main cause. Others include second-hand smoke, exposure to asbestos and radon, air pollution and family history.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses a chest X-ray, CT scan, bronchoscopy or biopsy, and PET scans to check spread.
Treatment
Treatment includes surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy, depending on the type and stage.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood or unexplained weight loss, especially if you smoke or used to smoke.
