Overview
Lymphoedema cannot usually be cured, but good care can control the swelling and prevent complications.
Symptoms
- Swelling of an arm or leg
- A heavy or tight feeling
- Reduced movement
- Thickened skin
- Repeated skin infections (cellulitis)
Causes and risk factors
It can be present from birth or develop after cancer treatment, lymph node removal, radiotherapy, infections such as filariasis, injury or obesity.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on examination and measurements. Scans may be done to rule out other causes.
Treatment
Treatment includes compression garments, specialised massage (manual lymphatic drainage), exercise, skin care and, for some people, surgery.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for persistent swelling. Seek urgent care for a red, hot, painful swollen limb with fever.
