Overview
Malabsorption can affect the absorption of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins or minerals. Treating the underlying cause usually improves it.
Symptoms
- Chronic diarrhoea
- Pale, oily, foul-smelling stools that are hard to flush
- Bloating and wind
- Weight loss
- Tiredness and anaemia
- Poor growth in children
Causes and risk factors
Causes include coeliac disease, lactose intolerance, chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, Crohn's disease, infections, bowel surgery and some medicines.
Diagnosis
Tests include blood tests for nutrient levels, stool tests, coeliac antibody tests, endoscopy with biopsy and imaging.
Treatment
Treatment focuses on the cause and may include diet changes, enzyme supplements, vitamin and mineral replacement and medicines.
