Overview

Meconium aspiration can block the airways and irritate the lungs. Most babies recover with care in a neonatal unit, though some need intensive support.

Signs

  • Green-stained amniotic fluid at birth
  • Fast or difficult breathing
  • Bluish skin
  • Grunting and drawing in of the chest
  • A limp baby at birth

Causes and risk factors

Risk factors include pregnancies beyond the due date, stress to the baby during labour, reduced placental function and difficult deliveries.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on the birth history, examination and a chest X-ray.

Treatment

Treatment includes oxygen, breathing support, antibiotics if infection is suspected and, in severe cases, surfactant or advanced ventilation.

When to see a doctor

This condition is managed by the neonatal team at delivery. After discharge, seek urgent care if your baby has breathing difficulty or blue colour.
