Overview
Meniere's disease usually affects one ear. Attacks can be disabling, but treatment can reduce how often they happen.
Symptoms
- Sudden episodes of severe spinning dizziness lasting minutes to hours
- Ringing or roaring in the ear
- Fluctuating hearing loss
- A feeling of pressure in the ear
- Nausea and vomiting during attacks
Causes and risk factors
It is linked to a build-up of fluid in the inner ear. The exact cause is unknown, but genetics, allergies and immune factors may play a role.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms and hearing tests. MRI may be done to rule out other causes.
Treatment
Treatment includes a low-salt diet, medicines for vertigo and nausea, diuretics, vestibular rehabilitation and, for severe cases, injections into the ear or surgery.
When to see a doctor
See an ENT specialist if you have repeated vertigo, hearing loss or ringing in the ears. Seek emergency care for vertigo with weakness, speech problems or double vision.
