Overview

Meniscus tears are common knee injuries in sport and can also happen with age-related wear. Many improve with rest and physiotherapy.

Symptoms

  • Knee pain, especially when twisting
  • Swelling and stiffness
  • A popping feeling at the time of injury
  • Catching or locking of the knee
  • Feeling the knee give way

Causes and risk factors

Tears can be caused by twisting the knee during sport or by degeneration in older adults.

Diagnosis

A doctor examines the knee. An MRI scan confirms the tear.

Treatment

Treatment includes rest, ice, physiotherapy and painkillers. Keyhole surgery (arthroscopy) may repair or trim the tear if symptoms persist or the knee locks.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if knee pain or swelling lasts, or if the knee locks or gives way.
