Overview

Myocarditis is often caused by a viral infection. Many people recover fully, but it can sometimes cause serious heart problems.

Symptoms

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Tiredness
  • Swelling of the legs
  • Flu-like symptoms beforehand

Causes and risk factors

Causes include viral infections, some medicines, autoimmune conditions and, rarely, vaccines.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis uses an ECG, blood tests, echocardiography and cardiac MRI. A heart biopsy is sometimes needed.

Treatment

Treatment includes rest, avoiding strenuous exercise for several months, heart failure medicines and treatment of rhythm problems. Severe cases need intensive care.

When to see a doctor

Seek urgent care for chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations or fainting, especially after a recent viral illness.
