Overview
Nasal congestion is very common and usually short-lived with a cold. Long-term congestion can affect sleep and quality of life and may need specialist care.
Symptoms
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Runny nose or post-nasal drip
- Reduced sense of smell
- Snoring and poor sleep
- Facial pressure
Causes and risk factors
Causes include colds, allergies, sinusitis, nasal polyps, a deviated septum, enlarged adenoids, overuse of decongestant sprays and pregnancy.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the nose. An ENT specialist may use a camera (nasal endoscopy) or a CT scan for long-term symptoms.
Treatment
Treatment includes saline rinses, steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines and treating the cause. Surgery may help structural problems.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if congestion lasts more than 10 days, is on one side only, or comes with nosebleeds, facial swelling or high fever.
