Overview
Nasal deformities may be present from birth or follow an injury. Surgery (rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty) can improve both appearance and breathing.
Symptoms
- A crooked or bent nose
- A bump on the bridge of the nose
- Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
- Collapse of the nose
Causes and risk factors
Causes include nasal fractures, previous surgery, cleft lip and palate, and natural variation.
Diagnosis
An ENT or plastic surgeon examines the outside and inside of the nose. Photographs and sometimes a CT scan help with planning.
Treatment
Recent fractures may be straightened within two weeks of injury. Later, rhinoplasty can reshape the nose and septoplasty can improve breathing.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor after a nose injury, especially if it looks bent or you cannot breathe through it. Seek urgent care for a swelling inside the nose after injury.
